Ingredients
Method
For the Dough
- In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast and 1 tablespoon of sugar in warm water. Let it sit until frothy, about 5-10 minutes.
- In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, and salt. Make a well in the center and add the oil, eggs, and yeast mixture.
- Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1-2 hours, or until doubled in size.
For the Filling and Baking
- In a small saucepan over low heat, melt the margarine. Add the chocolate chips, cocoa powder, and sugar, stirring until smooth. Let cool slightly.
- Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9x13 inch baking pan.
- Punch down the dough and roll it out into a large rectangle. Spread the chocolate filling evenly over the dough.
- Roll the dough tightly into a log and place it seam-side down in the prepared baking pan.
- Cover and let rise for another 30 minutes.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the cake sounds hollow when tapped.
- Allow to cool slightly before slicing and serving warm.
Notes
For a twist, add chopped nuts like walnuts or pecans to the chocolate filling before rolling up the dough. Store leftovers in an airtight container for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven for a freshly baked taste.
