Ingredients
Method
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet or wide pan over medium-high heat.
- Add diced onion and red bell pepper to the hot oil. Cook for 4-5 minutes, stirring occasionally, until vegetables are softened and onion is translucent.
- Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
- Add ground turkey to the pan, breaking it up with a wooden spoon. Season with salt and pepper. Cook for 6-8 minutes, stirring frequently, until turkey is browned and cooked through with no pink remaining.
- In a small bowl, whisk together ketchup, tomato sauce, brown sugar, apple cider vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, mustard, paprika, and garlic powder.
- Pour the sauce mixture over the cooked turkey and vegetables. Stir to combine well.
- Reduce heat to medium-low and simmer for 5-7 minutes, stirring occasionally, until sauce has thickened slightly and flavors have melded together.
- Taste and adjust seasoning with additional salt, pepper, or brown sugar as needed.
- Serve hot on hamburger buns with pickles and your favorite sides.
Notes
Store leftover sloppy joe mixture in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat gently on the stove or in the microwave. The mixture can also be frozen for up to 3 months. For a spicier version, add 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper or a few dashes of hot sauce. Make sure your Worcestershire sauce is kosher certified, as some brands contain anchovies.
